A study recently published by Nature (04/01/24) showed how some patients with long COVID experience post-exertional malaise, which involves worsening of fatigue and pain after physical or mental exertion. A new study provides insights into the underlying causes of this symptom.
It found that long COVID patients have reduced exercise capacity related to changes in muscle structure, as well as metabolic disturbances. These patients also exhibit severe muscle damage and amyloid deposits in their muscles after exertion, which likely contributes to their post-exertional malaise.
This highlights novel mechanisms that can help explain this debilitating symptom of long COVID.
