Where are our leaders?

The Jon Snow Project published an editorial (25/11/23) rebutting a Newsweek commentary that blamed COVID vaccines, not the virus itself, for declines in health and rising mortality. In reality, extensive evidence shows SARS-CoV-2 can damage every organ system both acutely and long-term, driving excess deaths before vaccines were even available.

Governments have failed to clearly communicate the risks of COVID-19 infection. This has allowed misinformation about vaccines to spread, despite their proven benefits against mortality and long-term impacts. Governments must strongly correct the record that the virus, not vaccines, are harming public health.

Urgent action is needed to address the root cause by preventing viral spread through vaccines, air quality improvements, normalized use of high-quality masks, and investment in next-generation interventions. Repeated warnings about COVID risks from health organizations are being ignored.

COVID-19 is likely contributing to global healthcare staffing shortages in many professions. It also causes long-term issues like long COVID and organ damage. Historical data predicted these effects, but messaging has downplayed the true risks.

Concrete harms are now clearly visible across society – from cognitive dysfunction to workforce capacity declines and severe impacts on education. COVID-19 has also been shown to impair immune function, increasing susceptibility to other illnesses.

In summary, maintaining normality by ignoring COVID-19 is completely unsustainable given the demonstrated widespread societal damage. Urgent large-scale efforts to prevent transmission and treat long-term impacts are needed alongside clear public communication about the risks of repeat infections.
