Caring February – Supporting Ourselves and Each Other
As we step into February, we’re holding space for something we don’t often get in healthcare: care for ourselves.
This month at SHH-UK, we’re calling it Caring February – a chance to slow down, reflect, and focus on how we support each other, especially while living with or recovering from Long Covid.
We know it’s not always easy. That’s why our focus this month is on:
- Supporting healthcare workers with Long Covid to return to and stay in work
- Building peer support spaces where people feel understood
- Continuing to campaign for safe air in all healthcare settings to prevent more healthcare workers developing Long Covid.
At SHH-UK we realise how isolating having Long Covid can be. So we are excited to announce the start of our online support group which will run twice a month (see below for more information). We will continue to run a cognitive dysfunction support group four times a year. Our peer support groups are designed to complement, not replace medical or occupational health care.

Returning to work with Long Covid
If you are trying to return to work while managing Long Covid, we see you.
Symptoms like brain fog, fatigue, post-exertional crashes, and dizziness can make even short shifts feel overwhelming. The pressure to “get back to normal” can be intense – but for many, normal no longer fits.
Without clear, consistent Long Covid guidance, workplace adjustments can become slow, inconsistent and stressful — for staff and managers alike. SHH-UK continues to highlight the need for fair, timely and compassionate workplace processes that recognise Long Covid as a long-term condition.
You deserve a working life that’s paced, protected, and respects your limits. That’s why we’ve pulled together some practical guidance on our Resources Page , including:
Some adjustments that others have found helpful:
- A phased return with reduced hours
- Adjusting or avoiding high-exertion or cognitively demanding tasks
- Rest breaks, flexible start times, or quiet workspaces
- Measures to reduce reinfection risk — such as better ventilation or masking
Not sure how to ask for adjustments or where to begin? Email us at info@shh-uk.org. We can help signpost or support you to take the next step.
Self-care is a phrase that gets used a lot — but for those living with Long Covid, it can look very different.
- Saying “no” without guilt
- Cancelling plans without apology
- Prioritising rest, even when it feels uncomfortable
- Pacing your day around energy limits — or lying flat when needed
- Letting go of the idea that you have to push through
Grieving what’s been lost is also a form of care. So is asking for help. So is connecting with people who truly understand.
In Caring February, we just want to say:
You are not weak. You are adapting. You are not alone.
If you'd like to share what caring means to you, or what helps you keep going, we'd love to hear from you.

Prevention Matters
Prevention remains critical. Every COVID-19 infection avoided reduces the risk of Long Covid and protects both individuals and the wider healthcare workforce. This is why SHH-UK continues to call for effective infection prevention measures, including better ventilation, access to respirator masks, and policies that support staff to work safely.
As part of our #SafeAir4All campaign we have developed some resources which can be accessed via our website. This includes:
- A poster that can be put up in healthcare settings
- A position statement outlining the evidence for safe air in healthcare settings – download by clicking here
- A position statement detailing the changes needed to UK infection prevention and control guidance – available by clicking here
- A CO2 monitors explainer guide

Let us know what other resources you think we need to support you in campaigning for safe air in healthcare settings. Email us your ideas at info@shh-uk.org.
Please continue to post your photos of carbon dioxide (CO2) readings in healthcare settings onto social media with the hashtag #SafeAir4All

As part of Caring February, we’re creating more opportunities for connection, understanding, and mutual support.
SHH-UK peer support groups provide a safe, confidential space for healthcare workers living with Long Covid to connect, share experiences, and support one another. These groups are peer support and do not replace medical or occupational health advice.
We're starting a new online support group that will meet every 2nd and 4th Tuesday of the month at 11am. The first meeting is on Tuesday 24th February, 11am via Teams. Join our online support group by clicking here.
This group doesn't have a formal agenda and welcomes all types of healthcare workers living with Long Covid, whether you're currently employed or not.
The group will be shaped by its members over time, with the support of Amatur-Rahmaan, Amber and Gonenc (SHH-UK volunteers).
Caring for others starts with being cared for ourselves.

Long Covid Awareness pins
Long Covid Awareness Day takes place on 15 March.
To mark the day, we are making Long Covid Awareness pins available. Wearing one is a simple way to show solidarity with healthcare workers living with Long Covid and to keep the conversation visible in our workplaces.
Proceeds from pin sales support SHH-UK’s ongoing work, including peer support and advocacy for safer healthcare environments.
Pins are £7 each or £23 for four.
If you would like to purchase one, please visit shh-uk.org/shop.
As always, your support in whatever form it takes is greatly appreciated.

Sarah
Sarah has been in the creative production industry for over 20 years, experienced in end-to-end production including writing, directing, video editing and more. She started at GMTV at the age of 17 and worked with well-known companies including Disney and ITV. When she was made redundant in 2024, she decided to pivot into using her skills in new sectors; including social media, YouTube, and charity. Having lost a friend to COVID in 2020, and experiencing recurring health issues herself, she joined SHH-UK as a Video Producer to use her skills to produce content that will help and connect others who need the support the most.
