This week’s research summary explores how Long Covid services could be redesigned around what patients say they actually need.
Researchers followed people previously treated at a specialist Long Covid clinic in Italy to understand how their symptoms, quality of life and unmet healthcare needs changed over time. Participants completed follow-up questionnaires that were compared with information collected during their earlier clinical assessment.
Key findings
- Most Long Covid symptom clusters increased since the initial consultation, particularly musculoskeletal, neurocognitive and psychological symptoms.
- Around 80% of participants continued to experience at least one symptom cluster.
- 22.2% reported unmet needs for diagnostic testing and specialist services.
- 15.4% reported unmet psychological support.
- Women consistently reported greater unmet healthcare needs than men.
- Although symptom burden increased, participants’ own perception of their overall wellbeing also improved over time.
Why does this matter?
The researchers suggest that Long Covid patient-reported needs services may need to move beyond simply searching for a cure and instead focus on helping people live well with the condition through coordinated, patient-centred care. They propose improvements including structured education, multidisciplinary care pathways, proactive case management and routine measurement of quality of life
