This ME Association guide, published in February 2024, provides comprehensive information for people with ME/CFS and Long Covid about their rights and options in the workplace. It covers legal protections under the Equality Act 2010, including the right to reasonable adjustments in the workplace and protection from discrimination.

The report outlines the key challenges faced by those affected when returning to or remaining in the workplace, including fluctuating symptoms, cognitive and mobility difficulties and the risk of relapse. It gives practical advice on phased return, disclosing medical information and negotiating adjustments in the workplace.

The document also explains how to access support such as the Health Adjustment Passport and government programmes such as Access to Work. It discusses how ill health affects entitlement to benefits such as Universal Credit, Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) and Personal Independence Payment (PIP) and how these relate to employment.

Guidance is provided on sick leave, statutory sick pay, ill health retirement, and national insurance contributions. The document also includes links to current NICE guidelines and other resources to help people navigate care, benefits and employment while living with ME/CFS or Long Covid.
