In their response to a Parliamentary question on 2nd February 2026, the Government has confirmed that its COVID-19 vaccination policy continues to prioritise only the prevention of severe acute illness, hospitalisation and death, with no meaningful consideration of Long Covid in vaccination decision-making. Relying on advice from the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI), the spring 2026 COVID-19 vaccination programme remains restricted to adults aged 75 and over, care home residents, and immunosuppressed people aged six months and over — the same groups eligible in autumn 2025.
Despite growing evidence of the long-term health, social and economic impacts of Long Covid, the JCVI states that it is uncertain whether additional vaccine doses influence the risk, severity or progression of Long Covid. As a result, vaccination policy continues to overlook prevention of chronic illness, leaving many healthcare workers, working-age adults and children unprotected against the ongoing risk of developing Long Covid following infection.
