The Long Covid, Long Consequences report (Poverty Alliance & Robert Gordon University, 2025) explores the financial, employment, and social security impacts of Long Covid in Scotland. Drawing on interviews with people living with Long Covid and third-sector stakeholders, the study highlights how the condition has left many households facing reduced income, job loss, early pension drawdowns, and mounting debt.

Participants described difficulties securing adequate employer support, barriers in accessing social security, and the additional costs of managing daily life with a fluctuating health condition. These challenges were compounded by the cost-of-living crisis, with some families forced into severe cutbacks and increased stress.

The report calls for urgent action from employers and governments, including:

  • Recognising Long Covid as a disability.

  • Improving access to financial support and social security.

  • Providing better workplace policies, flexibility, and adjustments.

  • Raising awareness of the fluctuating nature of Long Covid among healthcare providers, employers, and benefit systems.

Overall, the findings show that Long Covid is not just a health issue but a major social and economic challenge, disproportionately affecting people in disadvantaged groups, and requiring coordinated policy reform to ensure dignity and security for those impacted.
