An editorial in the January 2026 edition of Evidence Based Nursing, co-authored by SHH-UK Chair Dr Alison Twycross, examines how nursing responded to COVID-19 and highlights missed opportunities in supporting people living with Long Covid. The authors argue that while nursing played a vital role during the acute phase of the pandemic, there was a lack of professional leadership and preparedness for the longer-term consequences of infection.

Drawing on patient stories and nursing expertise, the editorial sets out a practical framework to support people with Long Covid, covering areas such as symptom management, service navigation, financial advice and cross-disciplinary working. It calls for stronger nursing leadership, better preparedness for future health crises, and policy action to ensure the healthcare workforce is supported rather than harmed during emergencies.
