Outdated Infection Prevention and Control Guidance Is Putting Lives at Risk

Despite overwhelming scientific consensus that Covid-19 and other respiratory viruses are primarily transmitted through the air, current UK Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) guidance remains rooted in outdated concepts. This position statement from SHH-UK sets out the urgent need to update national IPC manuals to reflect modern, evidence-based understanding of transmission. The position statement calls for the inclusion of multidisciplinary expertise, recognition of airborne transmission, improved respiratory protection for healthcare workers, and integration of indoor air quality monitoring. Failure to act continues to endanger staff, patients, and visitors in healthcare settings.

Below an infographic summarising the changes needed to IPC can be seen, followed by a copy of the position statement which can be downloaded and shared.
