Summary – Covid-19: Lack of surveillance leaves UK in dark as hospital admissions rise, experts warn (BMJ, Oct 2025)

This BMJ news article reports growing concern among UK virologists and clinicians about rising COVID-19 hospital admissions and the country’s reduced surveillance capacity.

By mid-September 2025, hospital admission rates had increased by 60% in a month, from 1.71 to 2.73 per 100,000, and confirmed weekly cases rose 22%. Experts attribute this rise to return to school and work, more indoor mixing, waning immunity, and cooler weather.

Professor Lawrence Young (Warwick University) and others warned that the loss of routine community testing leaves the UK “flying blind,” unable to track SARS-CoV-2 spread or anticipate new waves. Current monitoring focuses almost entirely on hospital data, which experts say is a poor proxy for community transmission and unhelpful for NHS planning.

The article also criticises tightened vaccine eligibility, which now includes only those aged 75+, care home residents, and immunosuppressed individuals—with frontline health and care workers no longer covered. Experts argue this policy is “miserly” and financially driven, risking inadequate protection for younger vulnerable groups.

New Omicron subvariants XFG and NB.1.8.1 are spreading, with NB.1.8.1 more infectious and XFG showing partial immune escape. However, there is no evidence of increased severity.

Overall, the piece warns that cuts to testing, limited vaccination access, and new variant spread have left the UK poorly prepared for winter COVID pressures, with experts calling for restored surveillance and broader preventive action.
